Arklow Celtic 0 Wicklow Rovers 5
Our Wicklow league team, who are kindly sponsored by Phone Pulse, earned three points this morning after beating a 9 man Arklow Celtic 5-0. After an inspection the pitch was deemed playable, and Rovers started the faster of the two teams with Riain Sweetman, Jack Kelly and James Lang leading the line up top. Rovers took the lead through Sweetman when he did well to stay on his feet and jink around three players before dispatching into the far corner of the net. The game then took a turn, which saw two Arklow Celtic players receive red cards. The second half saw us try to make the most of our numerical advantage, but it wasn’t until Celtic scored an unfortunate own goal that we really got going. Dale Browne worked the ball well down the right flank and gave Hillary Khumalo the easiest of chances to nod home impressively for the third. The midfield trio of Brian Harrington, Jamie Power and Stephen Finlay shut out any breaks from the home side, and from this resolute defending we got our fourth. A quick break saw  Finlay square the ball across the box to captain Harrington, and he made no mistake in slotting it home. There was still time for one more goal as Jamie Power added another goal on his return from injury from a deflected free-kick. The defence of JJ Power, Rob Keogh, Simon Phillips, Fundi and keeper Nathi Trust held strong whenever questions were asked of them to keep a clean sheet. To their credit Celtic worked hard right till the end and had some really good spells, even though the odds weren’t in their favour. We will look to bring this good form into our match next week against Rathnew.

Wicklow Rovers 2 Glencormac 2
Wicklow Rovers  Kindly sponsored by PHONE PULSE hosted Glencormac in the Wicklow league this afternoon on a brilliant day for football. It was the first league fixture for both teams since the Covid 19 lockdown so both teams were looking forward to a cracking game. The home team started the stronger and a midfield trio of Dean Noble, Alan Power and Jack Crowley controlled the game excellently with a high tempo press and intelligent possession football. This enabled Rovers to create some great chances with Luca Rampersaud going close on a number of occasions. Glencormac were completely  over run and the Wicklow team made them pay when Jenson O'Connor-Cox slotted home nicely from the corner of the box with a curling right footed effort. Wicklow deserved more but went into half time 1-0 up. The second have started with more of the same and Matthew Traynor volleyed home after a Wicklow corner wasn't cleared effectively to make it 2-0. Glencormac then decided to push numbers up the pitch and eventually it paid off as a well worked corner routine ended in a  nicely taken finish to make it 2-1. Wicklow kept playing football however with Jamie Power and James Lang both having great chances to kill the game after some quick counter attacking football. Alan Power who was dominant in midfield all game also narrowly missed when he forced the keeper into a fine save from a flying bicycle kick. It was Glencormac however who leveled the game after a coming together on the edge of the box resulted in a free kick which was expertly slotted home. The points were shared at the final whistle as it finished 2-2. Thank you to Andy Bishop and his team for a great game and also for following all COVID protocols.

Wicklow Rovers 2 Newtown United 0
Wicklow Rovers, kindly sponsored by Phone Pulse, hosted Newtown United in the Premier league on a drizzly evening for football tonight. With the away team having made some new signings they were hopeful of turning over the Wicklow side but it was not to be. Wicklow always looked dangerous and were terrorising both Newtown full backs regularly down both flanks. Finally the ball fell to Luca Rampersaud in the box who was taken down after a sharp turn. Hugh Humby stepped up to blast home from the spot. Newtown had one or two forays into the Rovers half but it was Wicklow who doubled their lead after a low cross was forced into the roof of the net by Jamie Power on the back post. Newtown kept the pressure on and although Wicklow couldn't quite control the game in the manner required to remain comfortable, the home team saw out the game 2-0. Special mention must go to the Wicklow defence who held out strong for the clean sheet under some late pressure. Overall it was an entertaining game of football on a miserable damp night, well done to both teams.

Wicklow Rovers 1 Avonmore 2
Wicklow Rovers hosted Avonmore today in Whitegates in a mid table clash. The hosts started slowly however and after two defensive mistakes found themselves 2 down. The away side took there chances well but didn't have to work very hard to get them and went in to half time with the lead. Soon after Avonmore were down to ten men and played the majority of the half with their backs against the wall. They still threatened on the counter though and Wicklow stopper Ian Murphy was forced into a number of terrific saves. Wicklow, with fives minutes to go, got what was only to be a consolation goal when Adam Cuddihy finished well after some nice interlink play. The game ended 1-2 with a disappointing performance from the home side who failed to capitalise on their extra man.
