Remember the sanitizing of hands and the important practice of social distancing. We all have our part to play to help the people who are trying to keep us safe. Our health care workers are doing everything in their power to help us with this terrible virus while putting their own health at risk. Unfortunately, sport takes a back seat when something like this comes along, things are put in perspective. We wish you all the best of good health and a safe passage through this difficult period of time, please stay safe everyone and remember look out for each other.

Due to the ongoing coronavirus issue all the club's facilities remain closed until further notice. It's not just our facilities that are closed, all activities under the umbrella of Wicklow Rovers AFC are cancelled, this includes matches of any nature, training,  meetings, all weather pitch rental slots, the Saturday morning academy and basically anything to do with the club. Under no circumstances has any team to conduct training in or outside our club facilities, this is in the best interest of the health and safety of everyone. As we previously announced our Easter Camp scheduled to start on Tuesday the 14th of April has also been cancelled. Once again everyone please stay safe and let's all do our part to keep everyone safe.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 15th MARCH 2020

Due to the ongoing coronavirus issue and under the guidance of the FAI the club have closed all their facilities until further notice. Its not just our facilities that are closed, all activities under the umbrella of our club are cancelled, this includes matches of any nature, training, meetings, all weather pitch rental slots, Saturday academy and basically anything to do with the club. It also includes training outside of our facilities, under no circumstances has any team to conduct training in or outside our club facilities. We have also decided to cancel our Easter camp scheduled for Tuesday the 14th of April. These are extreme times and we as a club are putting the health and safety of our members, their families and the extended community first, so please everyone play your part and help us to keep everyone safe. To everyone please stay safe.

Due to the coronavirus the premiership in England has been postponed indefinitely, the knock on effect of this is that our Last Man Standing competition has been suspended. All 49 players that remain standing in the competition have been notified and as soon as the premiership resumes the competition will kick off again.

The club have also decided to suspend their St Patrick’s day raffle that was due to take place prior to the parade on St Patrick’s day. As soon as everything is back to normal a new date will be scheduled for our raffle so if you have tickets they will still be valid so please hold on to them or return them to any committee member, thank you.

With no games been played at the moment this would be an opportunity to give you an update on our two senior team’s state of play coming to the business end of the season. Our Leinster Senior side are on a great run at the moment, at the turn at Christmas they found themselves rooted to the bottom of the table, but this was a false reading as they had only played a handful of games. Their recent good run of six wins on the bounce, five in the league sees them in sixth position in the table just six points off the promotion spots with several games in hand on all the teams above them. With games in hand against the teams above them and games against the teams above they would also be harbouring hopes of a tilt at the title. The lads have also booked their place in the quarter finals of the Tom Carroll cup with their recent excellent 4-2 away victory over Railway Union. As you can see there’s a lot to play for as they enter the business end of the season, we wish BA and his troops the very best of luck in the remainder of the season. Our Wicklow League side after a slow start in the Premier league have found their feet and have produced some stunning results of late. This very young team with a sprinkle of experienced players have recently claimed some notable scalps. None more than in their recent Wicklow Cup win when they defeated the holders Glencormac United in their own backyard winning 2-1. This win set them up for victories against Newtown United and Ashford Rovers in their next two league games which meant they had then defeated the last three winners of the Wicklow cup. The lads will also look forward to an away tussle with Avonmore B in the last sixteen of the Wicklow cup, we wish Boodhan, Eoghan and the team the very best of luck for the rest of the season.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 8th MARCH 2020

Our Leinster Senior side maintained their recent good winning run with a good 4-1 victory away to FC Transylvania. Against a strong wind in the first half the lads went in at the interval a goal behind. Things weren’t looking good for the lads as the minutes clicked by in the second half in what was proving to be a scrappy affair. But with eleven minutes remaining Rovers struck, a deep cross from Rikki Quinn found the incoming Mark Johnson who stooped to head home the equaliser. Four minutes later Rovers went in front when Ciaran McGettigan was quickest to react when he pounced to fire home into the bottom corner of the net. The lads were now pushing their opponents back and the insurance goal came more or less straight away when Tommy Kelly bundled the ball home after good work by Mark Johnson and Ciaran McGettigan. It was Ciaran McGettigan yet again who put the gloss on a good result when he scored a fine individual goal as he picked the ball up some thirty five yards out, ran at the defence beating three players before coolly slotting home to make it 4-1. This win keeps the lads firmly in the title and promotion mix. On the day Mark Johnson, David O’Connor and Rikki Quinn stood out for Rovers.

Our Wicklow League side recorded an excellent 5-0 away win over Arklow Celtic, after losing at home to the same opponents on the opening day of the season this result just shows how much this young team has come on since they found their feet in the Premier division. Goals from Riain Sweetman, Brian Harrington, Hillary Khumbalo, Jamie Power and the fifth coming in the form of an own goal gave the lads all three points in an outstanding performance.

On Friday night our under 16’s were beaten 6-1 by Rathnew under the lights at Whitegates. Rathnew proved way too strong for the lads on the night with Robert Cherry scoring the Rovers consolation goal. Saturday’s junior action saw the 12A’s kick off their season in style with a superb 6-0 home win over Arklow Town A at Whitegates. A brace from Josh McCall and singles from David Johnson, Sam Behan, Sean Patrick Guerin and Aaron Fitzsimons got Rovers season off to a perfect start. The 12C’s lost 4-1 to Roundwood but to their credit their performance deserved a closer score line. Peter Duke was the Rovers goalscorer on the day. An understrength under 14 side travelled to take on Avonmore and came home with an excellent three points in a fine 3-0 win. Danny Kavanagh fired home two goals with Charlie Czwalina notching the other in what was a fantastic all round team performance. A special thank you to Filip Stypula from the under 13’s for helping out on the day.

Sunday’s action saw the 13A’s go down 3-1 to Arklow Town A at the Rocky Road, Arklow proved to be more clinical in front of goal and that in the end was the difference between the two sides. Finn Dunne netted for Rovers. The under 15’s kicked off their season in impressive style when they recorded a 6-0 win over near neighbours Rathnew. A brace from Steven Gormley and singles from Sam Culleton, Jack Noble, Ryan McConnell and Ruairi Jenkinson paved the way for an excedllent win. Also well done to team captain Aaron Nolan who kept a clean sheet on his return from a broken arm

The club will be running an Easter camp, it will run from Tuesday 14th of April to Friday 17th of April. The camp will run from 10am to 2pm daily and will take place at Whitegates. The camp is open to girls and boys from the age of 4 years upwards. All participants will receive an Easter egg on the final day of the camp. All participants should bring a packed lunch, drink, rain jacket, football, football boots and shin guards. Registration forms can also be downloaded from the home page of the club website at www.wicklowrovers.com

First Prize is €300, second prize is €200, third prize is a €100 voucher for O’Reilly’s Hardware, fourth prize is afternoon tea for two at Tinakilly House, fifth prize is a family pass x 10 swims at Coral Leisure with many more prizes on the day. Tickets are €2 each or three for €5. All teams should have their tickets by now, we ask that you do your best to try and sell your allocation.

Our Last Man Standing competition moves on to round three next week, at the time of going to print we had 39 players definitely through with another 10 players on Leicester in the Monday night game hoping to join them. Wolves [23], Tottenham [3] and Southampton [2] were the teams that let players down at the weekend while Liverpool [24], Sheffield Utd [8], Arsenal [6] and Chelsea [1] were the teams whose selections saw them progress to round three.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 1st MARCH 2020

Storm Jorge put paid to our Leinster Senior team’s scheduled game with Hartstown/Huntstown at the weekend when the LSL enforced a blanket postponement of games. There was no luck in terms of playing for our Wicklow League side either as their game away to St Anthonys was called off after the Kilcoole side withdrew from the league.

Our under 18’s went down to a disappointing 3-0 defeat at the hands of Avonmore at Whitegates on Saturday afternoon. Rovers were the better side in the first half but didn’t make their dominance tell. Both Paul Marah and Charlie Leonard had chances to give Rovers the lead but were unlucky. Unfortunately for the lads Avonmore added two further goals in a five minute spell in the second half to claim all three points. The under 17’s match away to Coolboy Rangers was called off because of the bad weather.

Saturday’s junior action saw the under 12B’s go down narrowly to a good St Patricks side losing 1-0. The team battled the elements and put in a good shift and were unlucky not to get something from the game. The under 13B’s get their season off to the perfect start, four goals, a clean sheet and three points gave them a dream start after they saw off Greystones United B winning 4-0. Rovers goalscorers on the day were Calum Hodgkinson, Elliot Gaynor, Milli Phelan and Jack Neville in what was an excellent all round team performance.

On Sunday the under 14’s lost 3-1 at home to Enniskerry, the away side went in front, but Rovers levelled matters soon after with a neat finish from Georgie O’Neill. Rovers pushed for the winner but got caught with a quick breakaway from the away side to go 2-1 down. Then as Rovers piled forward in search of an equaliser the away side added a third against the run of play. Despite the result the lads put in a good performance. Our under 16 girls played out a thrilling 2-2 draw with Portmarnock at Whitegates. The girls had the majority of possession in the first half but got caught against the run of play on the half hour mark and just on the stroke of half time to leave them 2-0 down at the break. The second half saw more of the same, but this time Rovers got their just rewards, first it was Katie Marah who netted a fine strike from a free kick and then the leveller came from Sophie Fogarty after a mazy run. This was an excellent performance from the girls and they can consider themselves unlucky not to claim all three points.

Everyone at Wicklow Rovers AFC would like to extend their sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Margaret McGettigan of Milford, Donegal who sadly passed away recently. Margaret’s son John Gerard has been involved with our club over the years in a playing and coaching capacity. Currently her grandson Ciaran plays for our Leinster Senior team. John and his family have been big supporters of the club over the years. Our thoughts and prayers are with her daughter Rosaleen, her sons John Gerard, Philip and Christopher, daughters-in-law, son-in-law, grandchildren, sisters, relatives and friends. May she rest in peace.
