WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 21st APRIL 2019
The club's second team played Newtown United on Thursday in the Wicklow cup quarter final. Newtown were the heavy favourites going into the match and took the lead very early on in the first half with an og. Many people thought this was going to be the start of a big defeat for Rovers but to everyone’s surprise they equalized almost immediately after they conceded. Paddy O’Keane was the goalscorer. Only ten minutes or less went by and Stephen Finlay found himself at the edge of the Newtown box and crossed the ball in to find Jack Crowley who placed the ball into the back of the net making it 2-1 to Rovers. The second half commenced and Newtown went on the counter attack and scored an early goal to make it 2-2. Disaster struck as the floodlights cut out and the match had to be abandoned. Both sides will have felt they could’ve won the game but nevertheless a replay will decide who’s going through to the next stage of the cup. Replay in Whitegates next Thursday.
Our Last Man Standing competition saw 49 players go into week 7 over the weekend, unfortunately for 27 players they made their exit from the competition. The players that went with Bournemouth to beat relegated Fulham were shocked when the Londoners defeated the Cherries in their own backyard winning 1-0 which meant 14 players went out. Another 10 players left the competition when their selection Wolves could only manage a scoreless draw at home to Brighton. Arsenal’s 3-2 defeat to neighbours Crystal Palace saw a further 3 players eliminated. Going through to the next round were the 9 players who picked Watford away to Huddersfield and they duly obliged by winning 2-1. A single player made it through when title chasing Liverpool beat Cardiff 2-0. As it stands we have definitely got 10 players into round 8 with another 12 players hoping to join them when their selection Chelsea entertain Burnley at Stamford Bridge in the Monday night game in front of the Sky Sports cameras. The club would like to wish all our remaining players the very best of luck in the remainder of the competition. Also we would like to thank everyone who participated in our competition, your continuous support is very much appreciated.

The youths earned a credible draw with Arklow Celtic at Whitegates, trailing 1-0 the lads battled back to gain a share of the spoils with a goal from Thomas O’Neill. They had a couple of chances late on to snatch all three points but luck wasn’t with them.
Junior action started on Thursday night when the under 13's made the short journey to Shamrock Park to take on neighbours Rathnew. Both teams served up some exciting football in a seven goal thriller. The villagers ran out 4-3 winners in a humdinger of a game. Eoin Kennedy nabbed a brace with Danny Kavanagh scoring one. Lorcan Sinnott stood out for Rovers in a good team performance.
On Saturday the under 15's recorded a good 3-1 victory at home to Avonmore. Ruaidhri Kelly fired home two goals with Robert Cherry adding a single to help claim all three points.
Sunday’s action saw the under 12B’s draw 1-1 with Aughrim Rgrs, Jack Neville fired home his fourth goal of the campaign in what was an exciting game between two even teams. Our 13’s took on last season’s premier champions Arklow Town and the lads turned in an excellent performance to earn a 1-1 draw. The lads were 1-0 down at half time but they showed great character to level the game up when Sean O’Toole got on the end of a Lorcan Sinnott corner to force the ball home. Both sides had chances to win the game but a draw was probably a fair outcome. Rovers keeper Eoghan Doyle came in for a special mention with some good saves on the day. The under 12’s playing in the under 13 premier played out an exciting 3-3 draw away to Enniskerry. The lads raced into a 3-0 lead in the first half with goals from Cian Nolan, Sonny McHale and Matteo Loueko but unfortunately for the lads the home side came roaring back in the second period to fire home three unanswered goals to draw level. The lads had chances to snatch a winner but it wasn’t to be. All in all the lads turned in an excellent team performance. The 14B’s recorded a fine 3-2 away win over Ashford Rovers, Jack Noble, Ruairi Jenkinson and Peter Dunne nabbed the Rovers goals in what was a fine three points claimed. The under 15 girls went goal crazy as they hit Portmarnock for eight in an 8-1 victory. Goal machine Molly Sweeney brought her tally for the season to thirty four with four well taken goals. Aoife Caffrey made it nine for the season with a brace, Eve Kelly notched her second of the campaign while Hollie Cassidy scored her first goal for the club in what was a clinical display from every member of the squad. In midweek the girls lost 4-2 away to Lakelands with Molly Sweeney scoring both goals. The 16B’s lost 5-1 away to Coolboy Rangers, the lads never really got going in this game and never reached the heights of last week.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 7th APRIL 2019
The senior men's first team closed off their season with a 2-0 defeat at home to Ballymun United. With the league title already in the bag this had all the scenario of a typical end of season game, the lads were understrength as they were without some regulars. But after their successful season they now have a platform to push on and achieve further success in the coming seasons.
Junior action commenced on Friday night with the 14B's having a fine 1-0 victory over last season's league winners Aughrim Rangers. Cormac Waldron fired home a cracker to ensure his team would collect all three points in a cracking game between two good sides.
On Saturday the 12A's beat Arklow United 2-0 in Ferndale Park, this was a competitive game with Rovers carving out several good chances. Two of those chances fell to Sonny McHale and Cian Nolan and they made no mistake in finding the back of the net. The 16B's went goal crazy when they fired nine goals past Arklow Town at Lamberton winning 9-0. Ewan Culbert and Calum Rawl hit excellent hat-trick, Adam O'Reilly, David Lally and Keelan Vickers all registered singles in a clinical performance from the team.
Sunday's action saw the 12B's earn a point away to Enniskerry in a 1-1 draw. The lads fell behind in the first half but came storming back in the second period which they controlled for large periods. Filip Stypula scored the goal which earned the lads a well deserved share of the spoils. The under 15 girls recorded a fantastic 3-1 home win over Portmarnock at Whitegates, Molly Sweeney set them on their way before Justine Cronin added a brace to put them three up. The away got a late consolation goal in the dying minutes but the girls saw the game out to run out deserved victors. The 16A's lost 2-1 at home to St Malachys in what was a closely fought game. There was very little between the two teams with the lads a little unfortunate not to get something from the game. Reilly Hogan netted the Rovers goal.
